What you do

Homeopaths conduct extended individual consultations — typically 60–90 minutes for an initial appointment — exploring a client's complete physical, mental, and emotional picture, including symptoms, personality, life history, stresses, and how the person responds to their environment. Using this holistic picture, you select and prescribe a highly individualised homeopathic remedy from the homeopathic materia medica, based on the principle of 'like cures like' and the use of remedies prepared through serial dilution and succussion (potentisation).

You follow up clients over time, monitoring progress, adjusting remedies, and providing supportive consultation. Homeopathy is used by clients for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, although it is not a substitute for emergency or acute medical care. You maintain detailed case records, refer clients to their GP or specialist when medical conditions require it, and operate within the scope of homeopathic practice. Most homeopaths work in private practice. The Society of Homeopaths (SoH) and the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths (ARH) are the main UK professional bodies. The CNHC maintains a voluntary register for homeopaths. The Faculty of Homeopathy regulates medical doctors and other healthcare professionals using homeopathy within their professional scope. Homeopathy is not statutorily regulated.

Why this career is resilient

While homeopathy remains contested in evidence-based medicine, it retains a committed client base in the UK and globally, with clients valuing the extended, holistic, and person-centred consultation model as much as the remedies themselves. The individualised consultation approach aligns with growing demand for personalised healthcare experiences. International markets — particularly India, France, Germany, and Brazil — have strong homeopathy sectors.

The Society of Homeopaths and ARH provide professional accountability and public-facing registers. Private practice overheads are low — remedies are inexpensive, and the primary resource is the practitioner's time and expertise. Homeopaths often develop loyal, long-term client relationships that provide income stability in private practice. The role is deeply human and relational and cannot be automated.

A typical day

Morning: two initial homeopathic consultations — a client with recurrent sinusitis and chronic fatigue (90-minute case-taking covering physical symptoms, emotional state, sleep, food cravings, and constitution; remedy selection and prescribing) and a parent seeking homeopathic support for a child with recurrent ear infections. Afternoon: follow-up consultations for four existing clients — assessing response to remedies, adjusting potency or remedy where indicated, and providing ongoing support. Document cases in detail. Attend an online SoH CPD seminar on constitutional prescribing. Update and submit case records for SoH accreditation portfolio.
