What you do
Insulation installers retrofit thermal insulation into existing buildings to reduce heat loss. The work covers cavity wall injection (drilling and filling wall cavities with insulation material), loft insulation laying, internal wall insulation (fitting insulated plasterboard or stud-and-fill systems), and external wall insulation (applying insulated render systems to outside walls). You carry out pre-installation surveys, prepare surfaces, install insulation to manufacturer specifications, and ensure building regulations compliance. PAS 2030 and PAS 2035 certification is required for companies working on government-funded schemes such as ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation), which funds insulation for fuel-poor households. Specialisms include hard-to-treat properties, heritage buildings, and commercial retrofit. Progression leads to surveying, quality assurance, or managing an insulation contracting business.
Why this career is resilient
The UK has some of the least energy-efficient housing stock in Europe, and government policy commits to upgrading millions of homes by 2035. The ECO4 scheme alone funds hundreds of thousands of insulation measures annually, with successor schemes already planned. PAS 2030 and PAS 2035 certification creates quality standards that protect competent installers. Insulation work is entirely physical and property-specific — every home has different construction, access challenges, and materials. This work cannot be automated or offshored.
A typical day
Arrive at a terraced property scheduled for cavity wall insulation under the ECO4 scheme. Morning spent drilling injection holes at regular intervals across the external walls, connecting the injection hose, and pumping insulation material into the cavity. Afternoon filling and making good all drill holes, checking for missed voids with a borescope, completing the installation certificate, and tidying the site before moving to the next property.
Routes in
Apprenticeship
Earn while you learn: work with an employer and study part-time, leading to a nationally recognised qualification. Typically funded by the government and your employer.
Employer-funded training
Some employers — particularly the NHS, emergency services, and larger care providers — run their own funded training programmes. You apply for a job and train as you work.
Pay and costs
Earning potential: Insulation installers earn £24,000–£32,000. Experienced installers and team leaders earn £30,000–£40,000. Surveyors and quality inspectors earn £35,000–£45,000.
Training costs: Apprenticeship: no upfront cost. Employer-led training programmes: typically free (employer-funded). NVQ assessment fees: £500–£800. PAS 2030 company certification: £2,000–£4,000 initial assessment.
